EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE FIRST AID (INCLUDING CPR)

This course has been developed for educators and support staff working within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies.  It is delivered in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.

This course is approved by ACECQA.

COURSE DELIVERY

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at Elite Children’s Services or Third party facility.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Participants must have the physical capacity to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

COURSE DURATION

Face to Face – 8 hours (minimum) full face to face course

Blended delivery – 6 hours (minimum) face to face course with the addition of 2 hour self-paced learning to be completed prior to attending the face to face course

Refresher training – 6 hours (minimum) face to face course – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates.

Online Training with Face to Face Assessment - self paced online learning with a scheduled 30 minutes face to face practical assessment.

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Performance tasks and Practical scenarios -

  • Simulated First Aid Scenario – Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
  • Perform CPR on a child
  • Perform CPR on an infant
  • Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Manage a casualty with asthma
  • Manage a choking casualty
  • Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning
  • Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
  • Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
  • Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
  • Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)

Documentation - The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:

  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario

Theory assessment - A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

In day to day life, in the workplace, in the community or at home, you may be confronted by a life-threatening emergency such as someone experiencing Cardiac Arrest. Quick decision The course is delivered in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and applies to all workers or members of the community who may be required to provide CPR in the event of an emergency.

COURSE DELIVERY

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at Elite Children’s Services or Third party facility.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

As a minimum, entrants to this course must have literacy and numeracy competencies equivalent to the Australian Core Skills Framework Level 2. An example of an ACSF Level 2 competency is being able to read and comprehend the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis, request appropriate emergency assistance at the scene of the incident and complete incident reports.

In addition, it is recommended that entrants have current competency in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Participants must have the physical fitness to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration such as positioning a casualty ready to administer an autoinjector and administering the autoinjector and for administering asthma medication.

COURSE DURATION

Face to Face – 4.5 hours (minimum) – full face to face course

Blended delivery – 3 hours (minimum) face to face course – with the addition of 1.5-hour self-paced learning to be completed prior to attending the face to face course

Refresher training – 3 hours (minimum) – conditions apply for this option, for example, you will need to provide previous current certificates.

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Performance tasks:

  • Administer asthma medication without a spacer
  • Administer the adrenaline autoinjector for anaphylaxis
  • First aid for allergic reaction and anaphylaxis

Practical scenarios:

  • Breathing difficulties – Asthma

Documentation:

  • First aid/Incident report form
  • Complete a risk assessment for asthma and anaphylaxis and an individual management plan for a child with asthma and anaphylaxis based on a case study and information provided
  • Individual asthma and anaphylaxis management plan for a child, which includes a communication plan to raise awareness of the child’s allergies, triggers and their management plan

Theory assessment - A written assessment consisting of short answer and multiple-choice questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

ASTHMA MANAGEMENT IN THE WORKPLACE

Successful completion of this course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to be able to develop an asthma management plan and provide asthma related first aid interventions in the workplace. FIRST AID MANAGEMENT OF ANAPHYLAXIS

This course has been designed for individuals who are required to provide first aid to a person experiencing anaphylaxis until the arrival of medical assistance. This means being able to identify the triggers, signs and symptoms of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, and follow the standard first aid procedures to administer adrenaline using an adrenaline autoinjector to someone suffering anaphylaxis in the workplace or in the community.

  • Complete a risk assessment for anaphylaxis and an individual management plan for a child with anaphylaxis based on a case study and information provided
  • Individual anaphylaxis management plan for a child, which includes a communication plan to raise awareness of the child’s allergies, and their anaphylaxis management plan

How does the training work?

First Aid Training involves both Practical and Theory components.

To qualify for your Statement of Attainment you will need to have successfully completed both the theory assessment and the practical skills assessment.

Enrolment

On enrolment you will be given details on how to pay for your training- either in cash on the day or with a debit/credit card using PayPal Here.
If you chose to do so, you can complete the theory section prior to your practical assessment.

Practical Training Day

On your Practical Training Day you will be assessed on the practical component
If you selected face-to-face training you will also be assessed on the theory component.

Certificate

A nationally-recognised Statement of Attainment will be issued to all successful participants.
